The painting depicts Kirill Golovachevsky, a long-serving inspector at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, surrounded by three of his young pupils. The composition centres on the pedagogical relationship between the elder mentor and the children, who are shown engaged in their studies.

Golovachevsky sits in a composed manner, his hand resting on an open book, while the children hold drawing boards and writing implements. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the faces of the subjects, creating a sense of intimacy within the academic setting. Venetsianov employs a restrained colour palette, relying on dark, atmospheric tones to provide a backdrop that allows the figures to emerge with clarity. The textures of the clothing, from the inspector's formal coat to the simple garments of the students, are rendered with precision.

This work reflects the educational environment of the early nineteenth-century Russian art establishment.
