Description
A distinguished portrait by Max Slevogt, this work captures Julius Freund in a formal pose, rendered with loose brushwork and a muted colour palette typical of German Impressionism.
Max Slevogt, a German Impressionist painter, created this portrait of Julius Freund in 1917. Slevogt, along with Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann, belonged to the foremost representatives of German Impressionism. He was skilled in painting, drawing, and stage design. His work is characterised by its loose brushwork and attention to light and atmosphere. This portrait depicts Julius Freund, a man of evident stature, seated and posed in a three-quarter view. He wears a dark three-piece suit with a light-coloured shirt and tie. The sitter's bald head and neatly trimmed moustache add to his distinguished appearance. Slevogt's brushstrokes are visible, giving the painting a sense of immediacy and life. The background is kept simple, ensuring the focus remains on the figure. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by greys, browns, and creams, which contribute to the overall serious and contemplative mood of the portrait.
