A formal sixteenth-century double portrait by Sofonisba Anguissola. It depicts Juana of Austria in mourning dress alongside a young court attendant.
Sofonisba Anguissola painted this double portrait during her tenure at the Spanish court of Philip II. The primary subject is Juana of Austria, the King's sister and former Regent of Spain. She appears in formal mourning attire, a style she adopted after the death of her husband, Prince João Manuel of Portugal. The black gown is constructed from heavy fabric, likely silk or velvet, which absorbs light and creates a stark silhouette against the dark background. A high, pleated ruff collar frames her face, while a jewelled medallion hangs from a silver chain. Beside Juana stands a young girl, possibly a court attendant or a member of the royal household. Her attire contrasts with the austerity of the Princess, featuring a green gown with gold sleeves and decorative braiding. Anguissola captures a sense of quiet interaction between the two figures. Juana rests her hand on the girl's shoulder, a gesture that suggests a protective or maternal relationship. The composition follows the conventions of court portraiture, where posture and dress communicate status and piety. Anguissola was one of the few female artists of the sixteenth century to achieve international fame. Her position as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elisabeth of Valois allowed her to document the Habsburg family with a degree of intimacy. This work demonstrates her technical skill in rendering different textures, from the stiff lace of the collars to the metallic sheen of the girl's sleeves. The palette is restrained, dominated by blacks, greys, and earthy tones, which was typical of the Spanish court's preference for sobriety.
