A refined seventeenth-century portrait drawing by Cornelis Dusart, featuring the sitter Johannes Dusart within a decorative oval frame.
This portrait by Cornelis Dusart depicts Johannes Dusart, captured in a seated pose within a trompe-l'oeil oval frame. The work is executed in pen and brown ink with grey wash, a technique that allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow across the subject's face and clothing. Johannes is shown wearing the formal attire of the period, including a wide, flat collar, which was common among the Dutch middle class during the late seventeenth century.
Behind the subject, a book is visible, bearing the inscription 'ZANG-WORT IN GHEBET'. This detail suggests the intellectual or religious interests of the sitter. The lower portion of the sheet contains a calligraphic inscription providing biographical details, noting the subject's age as forty-five and his birth date in 1626. This inclusion of text is characteristic of portrait drawings from the era, which often functioned as both personal records and commemorative documents.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, is known for his genre scenes and portraits that document the social life of the Dutch Republic. While his output often focused on peasant life, this portrait demonstrates his ability to render the likeness of a specific individual with precision and restraint. The use of wash creates a soft, atmospheric quality, contrasting with the sharp lines of the ink used for the facial features and the decorative border. The composition is balanced, with the oval frame providing a sense of depth and focus on the sitter's expression. This piece offers a glimpse into the domestic and social identity of a seventeenth-century Dutch citizen, preserved through the careful application of ink and wash on paper.
