Wright, an English painter, is known for his portraits and his paintings of industrial subjects during the Enlightenment. He is often referred to as Wright of Derby, due to his long association with that city. The painting shows Jane Darwin seated, holding her young son on her lap. The figures are set against a dark background, typical of portraiture of the period, which throws the subjects into sharp relief. Jane Darwin gazes tenderly at her son, who looks back at her with an innocent expression. Her dress is draped in a classical style, with a green shawl over a red under-dress.
