A detailed seventeenth-century portrait engraving of the young James II, capturing the refined aesthetic of the Baroque period.
This portrait captures James II, the future King of England, during his youth. The work is a fine example of seventeenth-century printmaking, demonstrating the technical precision required for portraiture of the period. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, leaning against a stone ledge, a common compositional device in Baroque portraiture to suggest a relaxed yet formal posture. His gaze is directed towards the viewer, conveying a sense of immediacy and presence.
The artist, Louis du Guernier (I), was a French painter and engraver who spent much of his career in England. His work reflects the stylistic conventions of the mid-seventeenth century, characterised by careful attention to the texture of clothing and the naturalistic rendering of facial features. The use of cross-hatching and fine lines creates depth and volume, particularly in the drapery of the subject's cloak and the soft curls of his hair. The background remains relatively simple, ensuring that the focus remains entirely on the figure.
This print provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the Stuart court. Portraits of this nature were often produced to circulate the image of royalty and nobility, serving as a record of appearance before the subject assumed greater political responsibilities. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of detail, from the subtle shading on the face to the folds of the fabric. As a historical document, the work offers insight into the fashion and portraiture styles that were prevalent in Europe during the mid-1600s. The print is a clean, monochromatic study that captures the likeness of a figure who would later occupy a central position in British history, presented here without the later trappings of royal regalia.
