A 1555 etching by Jan Cornelisz. Vermeyen depicting Henry II of France in profile, wearing detailed armour.
This etching by Jan Cornelisz. Vermeyen depicts Henry II, King of France, in profile. The work dates to 1555, a period when the artist was active as a court painter and printmaker. The composition follows the tradition of royal portraiture, presenting the monarch in formal attire. Henry II is shown wearing ornate armour, which is rendered with attention to the decorative metalwork and surface patterns. His beard and hair are captured with precise, fine lines, reflecting the technical skill required for sixteenth-century etching.
The inscription in the upper left corner, 'Henricus Rex Gallorum, anno Dm M.D.LV', identifies the subject and provides the date of the work. The background is treated with simple, diagonal hatching, which serves to isolate the figure and draw attention to the profile. The artist uses varying line weights to define the contours of the face and the texture of the armour. This approach creates a sense of volume and material quality despite the monochromatic nature of the medium.
Vermeyen, a Dutch artist, spent significant time in the service of the Habsburg court. His work often reflects the international style prevalent in European courts during the mid-sixteenth century. This print is an example of the dissemination of royal imagery through the medium of engraving and etching, allowing the likeness of the monarch to circulate beyond the immediate court circle. The focus remains on the formal presentation of the king, consistent with the expectations of the era for royal portraiture. The print provides a clear record of the fashion and armour styles associated with the French monarchy during the reign of Henry II.
