A refined pastel portrait by Rosalba Carriera, depicting Gustavus Hamilton in masquerade attire during his Grand Tour in Venice.
Rosalba Carriera was a Venetian artist who popularised the use of pastel as a primary medium for portraiture during the early eighteenth century. This work depicts Gustavus Hamilton, 2nd Viscount Boyne, during his time in Venice as part of the Grand Tour. The subject wears a masquerade costume, a common choice for visitors engaging with the social customs of the city. Carriera captures the texture of the black lace veil and the soft sheen of the blue fabric with remarkable precision, demonstrating the technical capabilities of pastel when handled by a master.
The composition focuses on the sitter, whose gaze meets the viewer directly. The neutral background ensures that the colours of the costume, particularly the blue mantle and the dark lace, remain the primary focus. Carriera was known for her ability to render skin tones with a soft, luminous quality, a technique she refined throughout her career. This portrait is representative of the demand for high-quality, portable likenesses among European aristocrats travelling through Italy.
Carriera’s influence extended across Europe, as she spent time in Paris and Vienna, where her style was adopted by many contemporaries. Her work moved away from the heavier, more formal portraiture of the previous century, favouring a lighter, more intimate approach that defined the Rococo aesthetic. This print reproduces the delicate layering of pigment characteristic of the original pastel, allowing for a close examination of the artist's mark-making and colour application. It remains a fine example of the portraiture produced for the Grand Tour market, documenting both the individual and the cultural habits of the period.
