A detailed portrait of Fanny Holman Hunt by Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt, capturing the sitter with characteristic precision and emotional gravity.
This portrait depicts Fanny Holman Hunt, the artist's first wife, shortly before her untimely death in Florence. William Holman Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, applied his characteristic attention to detail to every element of the composition. The work captures Fanny in a domestic setting, positioned before a mantelpiece. Her attire is rendered with precision, particularly the heavy, patterned paisley shawl draped over her shoulders and the deep blue fabric of her dress.
The painting reflects the Pre-Raphaelite interest in material texture and symbolic objects. A dark vase sits to the left, while a mirror behind her reflects the interior space, adding a layer of depth to the background. The inclusion of a white flower, held in her hand, introduces a subtle narrative element often found in Victorian portraiture. Hunt utilised a clear, bright palette, which was a hallmark of his technique, ensuring that the light reflects naturally off the various surfaces, from the polished wood to the soft skin tones of the sitter.
Fanny Holman Hunt died of puerperal fever in 1866, shortly after giving birth to their son. Hunt worked on this portrait during a period of immense personal grief, and the painting remains a poignant record of his spouse. The composition avoids the idealised forms common in academic art of the era, opting instead for a direct, observational approach that prioritises the physical reality of the subject. The work is held in the collection of the Manchester Art Gallery, where it is recognised for its technical execution and its personal connection to the artist's life.
