A detailed eighteenth-century portrait by Dmitry Levitzky, depicting a young boy in an elaborate masquerade costume.
Dmitry Levitzky, a master of the Russian portrait tradition, painted this work in 1789. It depicts F.P. Makerovskiy dressed in a theatrical masquerade costume. The subject stands with a relaxed posture, leaning against a stone plinth. His attire is elaborate, featuring a deep green jacket, a bright red cloak, and a wide white sash. A large hat adorned with feathers completes the ensemble, reflecting the fashion for costume balls among the Russian aristocracy during the late eighteenth century.
Levitzky demonstrates his technical skill through the rendering of textures. The velvet of the jacket, the heavy folds of the red cloak, and the delicate lace at the collar are captured with precision. The artist balances the figure against a dark, atmospheric background that transitions into a faint suggestion of a landscape at the lower right. The lighting is focused on the face and the upper torso, drawing the viewer to the subject's youthful expression. This portrait captures the performative nature of eighteenth-century social life, where identity was often expressed through carefully curated appearances.
As a leading portraitist of his era, Levitzky was known for his ability to convey the character of his sitters while adhering to the formal requirements of court portraiture. This work is representative of his mature style, which combines a clear, objective observation of the subject with a refined sense of colour and composition. The painting remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship found in Russian portraiture of the period, providing a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the time.
