A charcoal and sanguine portrait of the Russian writer Fyodor Sologub, executed by Boris Kustodiev in 1923.
This portrait depicts the Russian symbolist writer Fyodor Sologub, captured by Boris Kustodiev in 1923. Kustodiev, a student of Ilya Repin, was known for his ability to convey the psychological presence of his subjects through precise draughtsmanship. In this work, the artist employs a restrained palette of charcoal and sanguine, focusing on the sitter's features and posture rather than elaborate surroundings.
Sologub is shown seated in a dark, high-backed chair, his hands resting in his lap. The composition is stark, with the deep shadows of the chair providing a contrast to the lighter tones of the writer's face and hands. The use of a monocle and the formal attire reflect the intellectual persona of the subject. Kustodiev uses subtle shading to model the face, drawing attention to the writer's expression and the texture of his beard. The background remains largely indistinct, which keeps the viewer's focus on the figure.
Kustodiev produced this drawing during a period when he was increasingly confined to a wheelchair due to spinal tuberculosis. Despite his physical limitations, his output remained consistent, and he continued to produce portraits of prominent cultural figures of the era. This piece demonstrates his technical control over drawing media, showing how he could achieve depth and volume without the use of colour. The work is a study in character, capturing the reserved and somewhat melancholic air associated with Sologub's literary output. It remains a representative example of the portraiture produced by Kustodiev in the early 1920s, reflecting the austere conditions of the time while maintaining a high level of technical finish.
