A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Jan Punt depicting Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I in a classic oval portrait format.
This portrait of Emperor Maximilian I is an etching and engraving by the Dutch artist Jan Punt. It depicts the Holy Roman Emperor in a bust-length format, enclosed within an oval frame. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century historical illustration, where the subject is presented with a sense of formal dignity. Maximilian wears a wide-brimmed hat and a heavy fur-lined cloak, which is fastened with a decorative chain, a common attribute of imperial portraiture from the period.
The print includes a cartouche at the base, containing a Dutch inscription that identifies the subject and notes his death at the age of sixty. The technical execution demonstrates the precision typical of Punt, who was active as both an engraver and an actor in Amsterdam. The cross-hatching used to create the background within the oval provides a contrast to the lighter, more delicate lines used to model the facial features and the texture of the fur.
Jan Punt was known for his contributions to historical publications, often producing plates that documented figures from European history. This work reflects the interest in biographical documentation that characterised the Enlightenment era. The print is a clean example of the reproductive engraving style, intended for inclusion in a larger volume, as indicated by the page numbering at the top of the sheet. The focus remains on the clear, legible representation of the monarch, prioritising historical accuracy and formal presentation over expressive interpretation. The work provides a window into how historical figures were visualised and disseminated to the public during the mid-eighteenth century in the Netherlands.
