A detailed etching and drypoint portrait of the Belgian poet Emile Verhaeren by Armand Rassenfosse, capturing the subject in a contemplative profile.
Armand Rassenfosse, a Belgian artist from Liège, produced this portrait of the poet Emile Verhaeren. The work demonstrates his technical proficiency in printmaking, specifically through the use of etching and drypoint. Rassenfosse was a close associate of Félicien Rops, and this influence is visible in the precise, controlled line work and the atmospheric handling of shadow.
The portrait captures Verhaeren in profile, focusing on the contemplative nature of the subject. The artist employs a dense network of lines to model the facial features, beard, and hair, creating a sense of volume against the mid-tone background. The composition is tight, cropped closely to the head to direct the viewer's attention to the subject's expression. The vertical creases visible in the print suggest the paper has been folded, a common occurrence for historical prints stored in portfolios or archives.
Rassenfosse often collaborated with writers and poets, and his work frequently appeared in literary journals of the period. This portrait reflects the intellectual climate of late 19th-century Belgium, where literature and the visual arts were closely linked. The artist's signature is visible in the lower left, while the title is inscribed in the lower right margin. The monochromatic palette relies on the contrast between the dark ink and the paper tone to define the form. This print offers a clear example of the graphic style favoured by Belgian Symbolist artists, who prioritised psychological depth and technical rigour in their portraiture.
