A refined nineteenth-century portrait by Vasily Tropinin, capturing the calm and dignified presence of Elizaveta Vladimirovna Mazurina.
Vasily Tropinin, a former serf who rose to become one of the most sought-after portraitists in nineteenth-century Moscow, painted this likeness of Elizaveta Vladimirovna Mazurina. The work displays the artist's characteristic approach to the genre, which prioritises the psychological presence of the sitter over excessive ornamentation. Tropinin was known for his ability to capture the domestic and approachable nature of his subjects, moving away from the rigid, formalised styles often associated with the imperial court.
The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common device in portraiture of the period that directs the viewer's attention toward the face. Elizaveta Mazurina is depicted with a direct, calm gaze. Her attire is understated, consisting of a dark garment accented by a delicate lace trim at the neckline and a simple, dark beaded necklace. The lighting is soft and directional, modelling the features of her face with precision while leaving the background in a deep, atmospheric shadow. This technique creates a sense of intimacy, suggesting a private moment rather than a public display of status.
Tropinin's brushwork is controlled and smooth, reflecting his training and his preference for a naturalistic representation of skin tones and textures. The portrait provides a window into the social circles of the Moscow merchant and gentry classes during the mid-nineteenth century. By focusing on the individual character of the sitter, Tropinin avoids the artifice of the era, offering a clear, honest depiction that remains accessible to the modern viewer. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original oil painting, preserving the quiet dignity of the subject and the technical skill of the artist.
