A refined eighteenth-century portrait of Elisabeth Christine von Braunschweig-Bevern by the French court painter Antoine Pesne.
Antoine Pesne, a French painter who spent much of his career in the service of the Prussian court, captured the likeness of Elisabeth Christine von Braunschweig-Bevern during the mid-eighteenth century. As the wife of Frederick the Great, Elisabeth Christine occupied a position of high visibility, and this portrait reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Prussian aristocracy during the Rococo period.
Pesne employs a controlled, refined technique to render the textures of the sitter's attire. The subject wears a deep blue bodice, adorned with silver embroidery and prominent pink bows, which provide a contrast to the dark, atmospheric background. Her hair is styled in the fashion of the era, decorated with small floral accents. The artist focuses on the delicate features of the queen, using soft transitions of light to model her face, while the composition remains focused on the upper torso and head.
This work is characteristic of Pesne's output, which often involved the documentation of royal figures with a balance of formality and decorative grace. The use of colour is deliberate, with the cool tones of the blue fabric offset by the warmth of the pink ribbons. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the sitter's presence to remain the primary focus. Pesne's ability to convey the status of his subjects through subtle details of dress and posture made him a preferred artist for the Hohenzollern family. This print captures the nuances of the original oil painting, preserving the painterly quality of the brushwork and the specific colour palette chosen by the artist to convey the elegance of the Prussian court.
