A portrait of the young Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, rendered in the precise style of the Early Netherlandish master Rogier van der Weyden.
This portrait depicts Charles the Bold, the future Duke of Burgundy, during his youth. Attributed to the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden, the painting captures the sitter in a three-quarter view against a dark, neutral background. This compositional choice directs the viewer's attention to the subject's facial features and his status as a member of the nobility. Charles wears a dark doublet, which provides a stark contrast to his pale complexion and auburn hair. Around his neck, he displays the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a symbol of his high rank and political affiliation within the Burgundian court. Van der Weyden was known for his ability to render human psychology through precise observation. In this work, the artist employs fine brushwork to delineate the contours of the face, the texture of the hair, and the metallic sheen of the jewellery. The subject holds a small sword hilt, a detail that suggests his role as a warrior and a leader. The painting reflects the technical mastery of the Early Netherlandish school, where oil paint allowed for a level of detail and luminosity that was previously difficult to achieve with tempera. The lack of environmental context is typical of the period's portraiture, which prioritised the individual's presence and social identity over narrative or setting. This print reproduces the subtle tonal shifts and the controlled lighting of the original panel, offering a clear view of the artist's approach to portraiture in the mid-fifteenth century.
