A detailed 1600 engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, featuring a complex allegorical portrait of Bartholomeus Spranger and his late wife.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicts the painter Bartholomeus Spranger in a complex, allegorical composition mourning his wife, Christina Muller. Produced in Prague around 1600, the work reflects the intellectual and artistic climate of the court of Rudolf II. The composition is dense with symbolic elements typical of the period, blending portraiture with memento mori motifs.
Spranger appears on the left, his gaze directed toward the viewer, while his wife is presented within an oval frame on the right. The space between them is occupied by allegorical figures, including a skeletal representation of death and a winged figure holding a scythe. These elements serve to bridge the divide between the living artist and his deceased spouse. The inclusion of a palette and brushes at the base of the monument links the act of artistic creation to the process of remembrance.
Sadeler, a master of the burin, employs varied line weights to define the textures of the fur, the delicate lace of the ruffs, and the anatomical details of the figures. The engraving demonstrates the technical precision required to render such a crowded, multi-layered scene within a single plate. The Latin inscriptions integrated into the design provide further context regarding the artist's grief and the transient nature of life. This print is a significant example of the collaborative and commemorative practices common among artists working in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. It captures the intersection of personal loss and professional identity, rendered with the stylistic complexity associated with Northern Mannerism.
