A refined seventeenth-century Dutch portrait by Pieter Cornelisz. van Slingelandt, featuring a woman in a garden setting rendered with meticulous detail.
Pieter Cornelisz. van Slingelandt, a pupil of Gerrit Dou, was a practitioner of the Leiden fijnschilders (fine painters) tradition. This portrait displays the meticulous attention to surface textures and material qualities characteristic of his output. The subject is depicted in a seated pose, positioned before a stone balustrade that opens onto a garden vista. Her attire, featuring a dark bodice and a white silk skirt, is draped with a warm, ochre-toned shawl. The inclusion of a patterned textile, likely an oriental carpet, draped over the balustrade provides a contrast to the smooth rendering of her skin and the sheen of her garments.
The composition employs a classic arrangement for seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, balancing the figure against a dark, atmospheric background. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the sitter's face and the delicate pearl necklace she wears. Van Slingelandt demonstrates his technical precision in the handling of the lace trim and the subtle play of light across the folds of the fabric. The garden setting, complete with classical statuary, suggests a degree of social status and refinement, a common convention in portraiture of the period. The artist's ability to render varied textures, from the heavy weave of the carpet to the soft lustre of silk, remains the primary focus of the work. This piece offers an example of the refined, polished aesthetic that defined the Leiden school during the latter half of the seventeenth century, prioritising clarity, detail, and a controlled colour palette.
