A masterful Baroque portrait by Caravaggio, depicting the Grand Master of the Order of Saint John in full armour alongside his young page.
Painted during his stay in Malta, this work depicts Alof de Wignacourt, the Grand Master of the Order of Saint John. Caravaggio presents the Grand Master in full ceremonial armour, holding a baton of command. The composition is defined by the artist's signature use of chiaroscuro, where deep shadows contrast with the metallic sheen of the steel plates. The light source is directed to catch the reflective surfaces of the armour, creating a sense of physical weight and presence. Beside the Grand Master stands a young page, who holds his master's helmet. The inclusion of the page provides a scale for the figure of Wignacourt, while the red hose and dark doublet of the boy offer a muted colour contrast to the steel and gold tones of the armour. The background remains dark and indistinct, a common feature in Caravaggio's later works, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the figures and their interaction. This portrait was created while Caravaggio sought the patronage of the Order of Saint John. The technical execution demonstrates his ability to render textures, from the cold, hard surface of the metal to the softer fabrics worn by the page. The work remains a primary example of the artist's approach to portraiture, where the subject is captured with a directness that avoids excessive idealisation. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
