A High Renaissance portrait by Marco d'Oggiono, depicting a youth as Saint Sebastian with characteristic sfumato technique.
Marco d'Oggiono, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, produced this portrait during the early sixteenth century. The work depicts a young man in the guise of Saint Sebastian, identified by the single arrow held in his hand. The composition reflects the stylistic influence of the Milanese school, particularly in the soft modelling of the facial features and the use of sfumato to transition between light and shadow.
The subject is presented against a dark, neutral background, which directs attention to the delicate features and the auburn curls of the youth. His expression is calm, with a slight tilt of the head that suggests a contemplative state. The attire consists of a dark blue tunic over a red garment, with visible gold chains draped across the chest. The hands are rendered with precision, showing the anatomical interest common among artists working in the orbit of Leonardo.
This painting demonstrates the technical proficiency of d'Oggiono in handling oil glazes to achieve a smooth, luminous surface. The treatment of the hair, with its individualised ringlets, shows a careful attention to detail. While the subject is dressed in contemporary clothing rather than the traditional classical drapery often associated with the saint, the inclusion of the arrow provides the necessary iconographic link to the martyr. The work remains a representative example of the portraiture produced in Lombardy during the High Renaissance, where the focus remained on the psychological presence of the sitter and the mastery of light.
