A refined Dutch Golden Age portrait by Isaack Luttichuys, capturing a young woman in a blue and gold gown with delicate lace details.
Isaack Luttichuys, a painter active in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age, produced this portrait of a young woman, traditionally identified as Susanna Reael. The composition follows the conventions of mid-seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, where the subject is positioned against a dark, neutral background to focus attention on the sitter and her attire. Luttichuys demonstrates his technical ability through the rendering of textures, particularly the contrast between the heavy, structured fabric of the blue and gold gown and the delicate, translucent quality of the lace collar.
The sitter is depicted with a calm expression, her hands resting gracefully while holding a white feather fan. Her costume is indicative of the wealth and status of the Dutch merchant class during this period. The inclusion of pearls, both as a necklace and as bracelets, serves as a common signifier of purity and prosperity in seventeenth-century portraiture. The light source, coming from the upper left, illuminates the face and the white collar, creating a soft modelling of the features that is characteristic of the artist's style.
Luttichuys was known for his refined approach to portraiture, often favouring a more restrained palette than some of his contemporaries. This work avoids excessive ornamentation, relying instead on the precise depiction of the sitter's clothing and jewellery to convey her social standing. The painting provides a clear example of the formal portrait style that defined the era, where the artist sought to balance individual likeness with the social expectations of the sitter's class. The work remains a representative example of the portraiture produced for the Dutch elite during the middle of the century, capturing the aesthetic preferences and material culture of the time.
