A portrait by Venetian master Lorenzo Lotto, depicting a young man with a book in a striped jacket, rendered with psychological depth.
Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, produced this portrait around 1526. The work depicts a young man in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed toward the viewer with a sense of quiet introspection. He wears a dark beret and a distinctive grey jacket featuring horizontal black stripes, a garment that suggests the fashion of the period. His hand rests upon a book, which serves as the primary attribute in the composition.
Lotto is recognised for his psychological approach to portraiture. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on idealised beauty or status, Lotto often captured a specific, fleeting mood or an internal state of mind. The lighting in this piece is directional, casting soft shadows across the subject's face and emphasising the contours of his features. The background is a muted, dark green tone, which prevents distraction and keeps the focus entirely on the sitter.
The brushwork is controlled, demonstrating the technical precision expected of a Venetian master of the sixteenth century. The texture of the fabric is rendered with care, showing the weight of the striped material against the subject's frame. The inclusion of the book suggests the sitter is a man of letters or a student, a common trope in Renaissance portraiture to denote intellectual pursuits. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original oil painting, preserving the atmospheric quality of the light and the sombre colour palette. It is a representative example of Lotto's ability to imbue a static image with a sense of human presence and individual character.
