A refined eighteenth-century portrait by George Romney, capturing a woman in a soft, luminous style typical of the British Neoclassical period.
George Romney was a highly sought-after portraitist in eighteenth-century London, competing directly with Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. This work depicts a woman traditionally identified as Emily Bertie Pott, a figure associated with the social circles of the era. The sitter is captured in a three-quarter view, her gaze directed away from the viewer, which creates a sense of quiet introspection.
Romney employs a restrained palette, focusing on the soft, luminous quality of the sitter's skin against a dark, atmospheric background. Her attire consists of a simple, light-coloured gown with a structured bodice, reflecting the fashion of the late eighteenth century. The brushwork is fluid, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the loose, upswept hairstyle. Romney often favoured this approach, prioritising the overall effect of light and form over excessive detail.
The composition is balanced and understated. By avoiding elaborate props or complex settings, the artist directs full attention to the subject's features and expression. This portrait demonstrates the characteristic ease with which Romney handled his subjects, often achieving a sense of immediacy that appealed to his patrons. The painting remains a representative example of British portraiture from the period, documenting both the aesthetic preferences of the time and the artist's technical approach to capturing a likeness. The work is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
