Agnolo Bronzino, an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence, is celebrated for his elegant and stylised portraits. Bronzino's artistic training began with Raffaellino del Garbo, later moving to the tutelage of Jacopo Pontormo. He was a court painter for the Medici family in Florence for much of his career. His portraits are characterised by their refined detail, smooth surfaces, and a certain emotional distance. In "Portrait of a Sculptor", a young man is depicted holding a small sculpture. The sitter's identity remains debated, but the sculpture suggests his profession. The figure is rendered with a smooth, almost porcelain-like finish, typical of Bronzino's style. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by blacks and muted tones, which serves to focus attention on the sitter's face and the sculpture he holds.
