A refined portrait study in black chalk and grey wash by the Dutch Golden Age master Philips Wouwerman.
This portrait study by Philips Wouwerman demonstrates the technical facility characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. Executed in black chalk with grey wash, the work captures a male subject in a three-quarter view. The artist employs a controlled application of wash to define the volume of the sitter's cloak and the soft contours of his face. The light source originates from the upper left, creating subtle gradations across the forehead and the bridge of the nose.
Wouwerman is primarily recognised for his equestrian scenes and genre paintings, yet his draughtsmanship reveals a keen eye for human anatomy and expression. The sitter wears a period-appropriate doublet with a wide collar, his posture relaxed with one hand extended towards the viewer. The sketch-like quality of the hand, contrasted with the more finished treatment of the facial features, provides insight into the artist's working process. The paper retains its original texture, allowing the chalk lines to remain visible beneath the wash layers. This piece offers a glimpse into the private studies of a master who spent his career documenting the social and military life of the seventeenth-century Netherlands. The composition is balanced, focusing on the psychological presence of the individual rather than elaborate background detail. It remains a fine example of the period's preference for monochromatic studies, which were often kept by artists as reference material for larger oil compositions. The work is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, where it is catalogued as a study of a man, reflecting the artist's ability to render character through minimal means.
