A refined 1694 portrait study by Dutch artist Cornelis Dusart, featuring a gentleman in a periwig rendered in graphite and grey wash.
This portrait by Cornelis Dusart, dated 1694, captures a gentleman in the formal attire characteristic of the late seventeenth-century Dutch elite. Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, is often associated with genre scenes of peasant life, yet this work demonstrates his proficiency in portraiture. The subject wears a voluminous periwig, a fashion that dominated European courts and upper-class circles during this period. His expression is composed, with a subtle, knowing gaze directed toward the viewer.
The medium consists of graphite and grey wash, allowing for a delicate modulation of light and shadow across the subject's face and the intricate patterns of his clothing. The artist employs a soft, tonal approach to define the texture of the wig and the fabric of the garment, creating a sense of volume within the oval frame. The composition is contained within a drawn border, a common practice for drawings intended for collection or display in albums.
Cornelis Dusart was active in Haarlem, where he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1679. His work often reflects the technical precision of his contemporaries, though he maintained a distinct hand in his handling of wash and line. This specific drawing is notable for its clarity and the preservation of the artist's signature and date, which provide a firm anchor for its place in his oeuvre. The identification of the sitter as Simon van Slingelandt remains a subject of historical inquiry, as the features align with the general portraiture conventions of the era rather than a definitive iconographic record. The work provides a window into the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch burgher class, where personal identity was frequently conveyed through the careful rendering of status symbols like the elaborate wig and fine textiles.
