A detailed seventeenth-century portrait study by Nicolas Lagneau, executed in black and red chalk on paper.
Nicolas Lagneau was a French artist active during the early seventeenth century, known primarily for his series of portrait drawings. This work displays his characteristic use of black and red chalk, a technique that allowed him to capture the textures of skin and fabric with precision. The subject is an elderly man, rendered with an unflinching focus on the physical markers of age. Lagneau uses the red chalk to suggest the warmth of the skin, while the black chalk defines the structure of the face, the deep lines around the eyes, and the folds of the clothing.
The composition is direct, placing the sitter against a neutral background to ensure the viewer focuses on the facial expression. The man wears a simple hat and a coat with a high collar, suggesting a figure from the working classes rather than the aristocracy. This interest in the common person was a recurring theme in Lagneau's output. His approach avoids the idealisation common in portraiture of the period, opting instead for a grounded, observational style. The use of wash adds depth to the shadows, particularly within the folds of the garment and the brim of the hat.
This drawing provides a clear example of the artist's ability to convey character through minimal means. The lines are deliberate, showing a confidence in anatomical structure and light. By focusing on the specific features of the individual, Lagneau creates a sense of presence that remains effective centuries later. The work is representative of the tradition of French portrait drawing that preceded the more formalised styles of the later Bourbon court. It remains a study in human observation, documenting the appearance of a contemporary with clarity and technical skill.
