A detailed graphite portrait by Jan van der Meer II, capturing a man in period attire with precise shading and classical composition.
This graphite study captures a male subject in a bust-length portrait, rendered with the precision characteristic of late seventeenth-century Dutch draughtsmanship. The artist, Jan van der Meer II, was a member of a prominent family of painters based in Haarlem. His work often reflects the technical rigour expected of the period, focusing on the careful observation of facial features and the texture of contemporary attire.
The subject is depicted with long, flowing hair, a style popular among the Dutch elite during the latter half of the century. He wears a cravat, which is rendered with subtle shading to suggest the delicate fabric. The artist employs varied pressure with the graphite to define the contours of the face and the volume of the hair, while the background remains largely unadorned to keep the focus on the sitter. The shading around the shoulders provides a soft transition, grounding the figure within the frame.
Such drawings were frequently produced as preparatory studies or as independent works for collectors who valued the immediacy of the artist's hand. The composition is balanced, adhering to the conventions of portraiture that prioritised clarity and likeness. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece. This print offers a clear view of the artist's technique, showing how graphite was used to build form through layered strokes and cross-hatching. It is a quiet, contemplative image that provides a window into the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch Golden Age, where the focus remained on the individual and the subtle play of light across the human form.
