An eighteenth-century portrait by Guillaume de Spinny depicting a lady of the Van de Poll family in formal attire.
Guillaume de Spinny, a painter active in the Netherlands during the eighteenth century, produced this formal portrait of a woman associated with the Van de Poll family. The subject is identified as Anna Maria Dedel, who lived from 1729 to 1779. The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture common to the period, placing the sitter within a classical architectural setting.
The subject wears an elaborate gown featuring a floral pattern, complemented by lace ruffles at the sleeves and a structured bodice. A heavy red mantle, lined with ermine, drapes over her shoulders and arm, suggesting a status of high social standing. Beside her, a crown rests upon a velvet-covered table, a detail that reinforces the formal and ceremonial nature of the depiction. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the textures of the fabric and the sitter's features, while the background remains relatively subdued to maintain focus on the figure.
De Spinny was known for his work among the Dutch elite, often capturing the refined tastes of his patrons through careful attention to costume and setting. This work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the mid-eighteenth century, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting lineage and social position. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the lace and the metallic sheen of the crown. The palette relies on warm earth tones, deep reds, and soft creams, which were popular choices for interior displays in grand homes of the era. This print captures the technical skill of the original oil painting, preserving the details of the sitter's attire and the surrounding environment for contemporary display.
