An expressive portrait by Alexej von Jawlensky, featuring bold outlines and a non-naturalistic colour palette that emphasises the sitter's introspective mood.
Alexej von Jawlensky, a Russian painter active in Germany, produced this portrait during a period of intense stylistic development. His work from this era reflects the influence of the Fauves and his association with the Neue Künstlervereinigung München. The subject is rendered with a deliberate departure from naturalistic skin tones, employing a palette of greens and blues to define the facial structure and the surrounding atmosphere. The composition is anchored by the figure's gesture, with a hand raised to the face, creating a sense of introspection. Jawlensky uses heavy, dark outlines to separate the figure from the background, a technique that flattens the pictorial space and directs attention to the expressive quality of the colour fields. The application of paint is direct and energetic, showing the influence of his move toward a more subjective interpretation of the human form. This work belongs to a series of portraits where Jawlensky experimented with the emotional potential of colour. By abandoning traditional modelling, he allows the hues to carry the weight of the expression. The contrast between the cool tones of the face and clothing and the warm, spotted red of the skirt provides a visual tension that is characteristic of his early twentieth-century output. The painting demonstrates his transition from the post-impressionist style of his earlier years toward the more abstract, meditative heads he would produce later in his career. The focus remains on the psychological presence of the sitter, achieved through simplified forms and a non-naturalistic approach to light and shadow.
