A late nineteenth-century cabinet card photograph from the studio of Johannes Lodewijk de Lavieter, depicting a gentleman with two children.
This cabinet card photograph, produced by the studio of Johannes Lodewijk de Lavieter in The Hague, captures a formal family portrait typical of the late nineteenth century. The composition features a seated gentleman with two young children, one perched upon a side table and the other resting on his lap. The subjects are dressed in formal attire, with the children wearing garments that reflect the period's fashion for juvenile clothing, including a prominent lace collar on the standing child and a sailor-style suit on the seated child.
The studio setting is characteristic of the era, utilising a plain backdrop to focus attention on the sitters. The furniture, specifically the carved wooden table, adds a sense of domestic stability to the image. De Lavieter, who operated his studio in La Haye (The Hague), was known for his professional portraiture services, which catered to the middle and upper classes of Dutch society. The sepia-toned albumen print retains the original mount, which includes the studio's branding and a royal crest, indicating the establishment's status.
Technically, the photograph demonstrates the clarity and tonal range achievable with the albumen process. The lighting is soft and even, minimising harsh shadows while defining the textures of the clothing and the facial features of the sitters. Such portraits were common keepsakes, often exchanged between family members or preserved in albums. This piece provides a glimpse into the social conventions and visual culture of the Netherlands during the late Victorian period, documenting both the individual sitters and the professional standards of contemporary commercial photography.
