A Victorian-era oil colour print by George Baxter, depicting polar bears in an arctic setting after an original painting by William Westall.
Polar Sky is a characteristic example of the Baxter process, a method of colour printing developed by George Baxter in the 19th century. This technique involved using a copper plate for the primary image, followed by multiple wood blocks to apply individual oil colours. The result is a precise, layered appearance that allowed for the mass production of high-quality illustrations during the Victorian era.
The image depicts a stark arctic scene, featuring two polar bears perched upon a rocky outcrop. In the background, jagged ice formations rise from the sea, set against a celestial display that includes a comet and constellations. The composition is contained within a soft, vignette-style border, a common stylistic choice for book illustrations of the period. The print was produced after an original painting by William Westall, an artist known for his maritime and topographical subjects.
Baxter prints were highly popular for their ability to replicate the appearance of oil paintings at a fraction of the cost. This particular work demonstrates the technical capabilities of the process, particularly in the rendering of the atmospheric light and the subtle gradations of the sky. The print remains a record of 19th-century interest in exploration and the natural world, themes that were frequently explored in literature and visual media of the time. The inclusion of the credit line at the base, noting both the printer and the original painter, reflects the collaborative nature of 19th-century print production.
