A 1905 Symbolist painting by Jacek Malczewski depicting a chimera figure beside a well, blending mythological themes with a pastoral setting.
Jacek Malczewski, a central figure in the Young Poland movement, frequently explored the intersection of national identity and mythological allegory. In this 1905 work, the artist presents a chimera, a creature from classical mythology, depicted here as a woman with a feline tail and avian features. She sits beside a wooden well, her back turned to the viewer, engaged in the act of braiding her hair. The presence of the well, often associated with life-giving water, is subverted by the title, which suggests a corruption of this essential element.
The composition balances the figure against a bright, open background. Malczewski employs a palette that contrasts the pale, luminous skin of the chimera with the darker, earthy tones of the well and her skirt. The light appears to emanate from the surrounding field, casting soft shadows across the figure. The artist's brushwork is deliberate, capturing the texture of the wooden staves of the well and the softness of the fabric.
Malczewski often populated his canvases with figures that blur the line between the human and the supernatural. This work is characteristic of his approach to Symbolism, where the narrative is not explicitly stated but rather implied through the juxtaposition of mundane objects and fantastical beings. The chimera, a recurring motif in his oeuvre, serves as a vehicle for exploring themes of temptation, danger, and the duality of nature. The setting, while seemingly pastoral, is charged with an underlying tension that invites the viewer to consider the darker implications of the scene. By placing a mythological entity in a recognisable, everyday environment, Malczewski creates a sense of unease that is typical of his broader artistic output during this period.
