A 1847 woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada from the series Poems on Portraits of the Famous and the Infamous, featuring historical figures and satirical poetry.
This woodblock print originates from the series Kyōka kijin gazō-shū, or Poems on Portraits of the Famous and the Infamous, published in 1847. Utagawa Kunisada, a prolific master of the Ukiyo-e school, designed these illustrations to accompany kyōka, a form of satirical or humorous waka poetry. The work features a collection of historical and legendary figures, including the poet Ono no Komachi and the calligrapher Ono no Tōfū, rendered in a style that balances traditional iconography with the artist's characteristic approach to figure drawing.
The composition is divided across two pages, presenting a group of figures in a domestic or scholarly setting. The lines are precise and clean, typical of the mid-nineteenth-century Edo period print production. Each figure is identified by a cartouche, a common feature in Japanese woodblock prints that provides context for the viewer. The inclusion of text surrounding the figures integrates the literary and visual elements, a hallmark of the genre. The figures are depicted with expressive faces and varied postures, suggesting a narrative interaction between the historical personages.
Kunisada was highly active during this period, and his output was immense. This specific series demonstrates his ability to manage complex compositions involving multiple figures while maintaining clarity. The print reflects the cultural interest in historical figures and the playful subversion of their status through the medium of kyōka poetry. The monochrome nature of the print allows the viewer to focus on the draughtsmanship and the arrangement of the figures within the frame. It provides a window into the literary and artistic circles of the time, where visual art and poetry were closely linked in the production of printed books.
