A fragment of the Wakan rōeishū, featuring elegant Heian period calligraphy by Minamoto Ienaga on gold-decorated paper.
This piece is a segment of the Wakan rōeishū, an anthology of Japanese and Chinese poetry compiled in the early 11th century. Known as a Tatsuta fragment, or Tatsuta-gire, this specific sheet is attributed to the courtier and calligrapher Minamoto Ienaga. The work displays the refined kana script characteristic of the late Heian period, where the fluidity of the brushwork reflects the aesthetic values of the imperial court. The text is presented on paper decorated with gold-leaf patterns, a common practice for high-status manuscripts intended for aristocratic use.
The calligraphy demonstrates a balance between the structured Chinese characters and the more cursive Japanese kana. The ink varies in density, creating a rhythmic visual flow across the page. The surrounding paper features a repeating motif of stylized clouds or waves, which provides a decorative frame for the written content. This fragment represents the intersection of literary culture and visual art in medieval Japan, where the physical presentation of a poem was considered as important as the verses themselves.
Minamoto Ienaga was a prominent figure in the literary circles of his time. His hand is recognised for its elegance and technical precision. The preservation of such fragments allows for an examination of the material culture of the period, specifically the production of luxury stationery and the transmission of poetic texts. The combination of gold-decorated paper and masterful ink work creates a visual harmony that remains a subject of study for historians of Japanese calligraphy. This print captures the texture and subtle colour variations of the original, offering a view into the sophisticated artistic traditions of the 12th-century Japanese court.
