A fine art print of the celebrated calligraphy by Northern Song master Mi Fu, capturing his expressive and spontaneous brushwork.
Mi Fu, a prominent figure of the Northern Song period, remains one of the most influential calligraphers in Chinese history. This work, Poem Written in a Boat on the Wu River, displays his characteristic approach to the brush. His style deviates from the rigid standards of his contemporaries, favouring a spontaneous and expressive execution that prioritises individual temperament over strict adherence to traditional forms.
The characters exhibit a dynamic tension, shifting between heavy, saturated ink strokes and lighter, more fluid movements. Mi Fu often manipulated the brush to create variations in width and pressure, which gives the script a sense of motion. The composition reflects the circumstances of its creation, as the rhythmic flow of the ink suggests the gentle movement of a boat upon the water. The spacing between characters is irregular, allowing the negative space to interact with the written forms.
As a scholar-official, Mi Fu viewed calligraphy as a medium for personal expression rather than mere technical display. His work is noted for its unconventional structure and the visible energy of the brushwork. This piece provides a clear example of his ability to balance control with a sense of freedom. The ink remains crisp against the aged paper, preserving the immediacy of his hand. Collectors and scholars often examine his work for its departure from the established norms of the era, noting how he integrated his personality into the structure of each character. This print captures the nuances of the original ink application, offering a view into the aesthetic values of the Song Dynasty literati.
