A refined example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy on a folding fan, showcasing the expressive brushwork and scholarly tradition of Wang Heng.
This work presents a fine example of Chinese calligraphy executed on a folding fan. The piece features bold, expressive characters rendered in ink upon a paper surface that has aged to a warm, muted tone. The brushwork displays the rhythmic control characteristic of the late Ming period, where the balance between fluid motion and structural stability defines the aesthetic quality of the script.
Calligraphy on fans served as a popular medium for scholars and literati to exchange poetry and personal reflections. The format requires the artist to manage the curvature of the paper, ensuring that the vertical columns of text maintain their visual integrity despite the physical folds of the object. The ink density varies across the strokes, revealing the pressure applied by the brush and the speed of the artist's hand. This specific composition integrates the text with the negative space of the fan, creating a sense of equilibrium.
Wang Heng, a scholar-official during the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties, utilised this medium to express his literary interests. The characters are written in a semi-cursive style, which allows for a degree of spontaneity while remaining legible. The presence of red seals at the lower left corner provides a visual anchor, contrasting with the dark ink of the calligraphy. These seals signify ownership or authentication, a common practice in the tradition of Chinese art collecting. The work remains a representative specimen of the literati tradition, where the act of writing is considered an extension of the individual's character and intellectual pursuit. By focusing on the interplay between the ink and the textured paper, the viewer can appreciate the technical discipline required to execute such a piece within the constraints of a fan format.
