A serene Muromachi period composition by Kano Masanobu, featuring a flowering plum tree above two waterfowl on water.
Kano Masanobu, the founder of the Kano school, occupies a specific position in the history of Japanese painting. This work, Plum Tree and Waterfowl, reflects the aesthetic principles of the Muromachi period, where Chinese ink wash traditions merged with indigenous Japanese sensibilities. The composition relies on the contrast between the gnarled, textured branches of the plum tree and the smooth, serene forms of the waterfowl floating below.
The plum tree, rendered with careful attention to the rugged bark and delicate blossoms, occupies the upper left quadrant. Its branches extend across the negative space, creating a sense of balance typical of the period. Below, two waterfowl glide across the water, their forms simplified and elegant. The artist uses subtle washes to suggest the movement of the water, indicated by fine, rhythmic lines that ripple outward from the birds.
As the official painter to the Ashikaga shogunate, Masanobu developed a style that favoured clarity and technical precision. This piece demonstrates the transition from the looser, more spontaneous ink wash styles of earlier Zen-influenced painters toward the more structured, decorative approach that would define the Kano school for centuries. The use of colour is restrained, allowing the ink work to define the forms. The silk support provides a soft, warm ground that unifies the composition. This print captures the original tonal qualities of the silk, preserving the quiet atmosphere of the scene. It is an example of the early Kano aesthetic, where the observation of nature is filtered through a formal, disciplined technique.
