A detailed Realist study of oxen pulling a plough in the French countryside, captured with anatomical precision by Rosa Bonheur.
Rosa Bonheur, a French painter known for her precise observation of animals, produced this work in 1849. It depicts a team of oxen pulling a plough through a field in the Nivernais region. The composition focuses on the physical exertion of the animals and the labour of the farmer, set against a backdrop of haystacks and a low horizon line.
Bonheur utilised a naturalistic approach, paying close attention to the anatomy of the oxen and the texture of the soil. The light is soft, suggesting an early morning or late afternoon sun, which casts long shadows across the furrowed earth. The scene avoids romanticised idealisation, opting instead for a direct representation of agricultural life in nineteenth-century France. The birds in the foreground add a sense of movement to the otherwise steady pace of the ploughing team.
This painting was commissioned by the French government and gained significant attention at the Paris Salon. It demonstrates the artist's technical skill in rendering animal forms and her ability to capture the atmosphere of the French countryside. The work remains a primary example of her contribution to the Realist movement, where the focus shifted towards the depiction of everyday life and the natural world with accuracy and restraint.
