A detailed study of oxen at work in the French countryside, painted by the French realist Rosa Bonheur in 1849.
Rosa Bonheur, a French artist known for her meticulous observation of animals, completed this work in 1849. It depicts a team of oxen pulling a plough through the soil of the Nivernais region. The composition focuses on the physical exertion of the animals and the texture of the freshly turned earth. Bonheur spent significant time in the countryside to study the anatomy and movement of cattle, ensuring the accuracy of her portrayal.
The painting captures a moment of rural labour with precision. The oxen, rendered in varying shades of white and brown, occupy the foreground, their forms contrasting against the dark, heavy soil. Behind them, the rolling hills of the French countryside extend into the distance under a pale, expansive sky. The figures of the farmers are present, yet the primary focus remains on the strength and presence of the livestock.
Bonheur achieved recognition for her ability to combine technical skill with a sympathetic observation of nature. This work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in rural life and the dignity of agricultural work. The artist avoided romanticised depictions, choosing instead to present the scene with a sense of grounded reality. The application of paint is controlled, allowing for the clear definition of muscle, hide, and the clods of earth. This museum-grade print captures the subtle tonal shifts and the atmospheric quality of the original canvas, providing a clear view of Bonheur's approach to animal portraiture and rural subject matter.
