A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, capturing a serene scene of figures on a pleasure boat along the Sumida River.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi captures a scene of leisure on the Sumida River in Edo. As a master of the bijin-ga genre, Eishi focuses on the grace of the figures, depicting women in refined kimonos alongside a boatman. The composition is part of a larger triptych, designed to show the social atmosphere near the Shin-Ōhashi Bridge. The artist, who transitioned from a career as a painter in the service of the Shogun to a printmaker, brought a distinct elegance to his work. His figures are characterised by slender proportions and a sense of poise that differs from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.
The scene balances human activity with the surrounding environment. The boat serves as a platform for social interaction, while the background provides a view of the riverbank and the bridge structure. Eishi uses a controlled line to define the folds of the garments and the architectural elements of the boat. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones that allow the viewer to focus on the composition and the interactions between the individuals. This print offers a glimpse into the urban culture of the late eighteenth century, where pleasure excursions on the water were a common pursuit for the city's residents. The work demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in a balanced visual narrative. By focusing on the quiet moments of daily life, Eishi provides a record of the aesthetic values of the period, prioritising harmony and balance in his depiction of the river scene.
