This print depicts Republican or Cliff Swallows, taken from John James Audubon's seminal work, *Birds of America*. Audubon (1785-1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, notable for his expansive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations, which present the birds in their natural habitats. *Birds of America* consists of 435 life-size prints, made from hand-engraved plates, and is considered one of the greatest achievements in American art and ornithology. The prints were originally issued in series between 1827 and 1838. In this particular image, two cliff swallows are perched near their distinctive mud nests, which are built on a cliff face. One swallow is in flight, while the other is perched on a nest. The nests are clustered together, suggesting the communal nesting habits of these birds. The illustration is characterised by its scientific accuracy and artistic detail, capturing the texture of the birds' feathers and the rough surface of the cliff.

Artist Biography
John James Audubon
He was born illegitimate in 1785 in Les Cayes, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), the son of a French merchant and a Creole woman. He was sent to America at eighteen to avoid Napoleonic conscription. He was also a serial fabricator: he claimed his father was an admiral (he was a captain), said his family had been imprisoned in the Bastille (they had not), and invented frontier stories about fighting wolves and sleeping in igloos. He ran a dry-goods store in Kentucky and was jailed for bankruptcy in 1819.
The paintings themselves are extraordinary: precise, dynamic, and composed with a narrative quality that goes beyond scientific illustration. His legacy is contested. The National Audubon Society and several regional chapters dropped his name in 2023 because of his documented history as an enslaver. He died in 1851.
