Description
A detailed etching by Jan de Bisschop depicting the figure of Aurora, based on Michelangelo's sculpture from the Medici Chapel.
This etching by Jan de Bisschop is part of his collection titled 'Signorum Veterum Icones', a series documenting classical sculptures found in Rome. The work depicts a reclining female figure, identified as Aurora, based on the sculpture by Michelangelo in the Medici Chapel. De Bisschop, a Dutch lawyer and amateur artist, produced these prints to provide Northern European artists with access to the proportions and forms of Italian Renaissance and classical statuary. The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch etching. De Bisschop employs a system of fine, parallel hatching to define the musculature and the soft contours of the figure. The light source appears to originate from the upper left, casting subtle shadows that give the form a sense of volume against the plain background. The inscription at the base, 'M.A. Bon.e marm. Fr. Salv.d.', refers to Michelangelo Buonarroti as the sculptor of the original marble, while 'Fr. Salv.d.' indicates the draughtsman or engraver involved in the reproduction process. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on genre scenes or landscapes, de Bisschop dedicated his artistic output to the study of antiquity. His work functions as a visual record of how classical art was perceived and disseminated during the Dutch Golden Age. The composition remains faithful to the original sculpture, capturing the specific pose and the heavy, rhythmic drapery that defines the figure. This print offers a clear view of the anatomical study methods employed by artists of the period, who relied on such reproductions to refine their understanding of human form and classical aesthetics. The monochromatic palette and clean lines make this piece suitable for a variety of interior settings, particularly those with an appreciation for historical art and classical motifs.
