A detailed botanical study from the Plantae et papiliones rariores series by Georg Dionysius Ehret, featuring hand-coloured specimens and butterflies.
This plate originates from the collection titled Plantae et papiliones rariores, a series produced by Georg Dionysius Ehret between 1748 and 1759. Ehret was a significant figure in eighteenth-century botanical art, known for his precision and scientific accuracy. He worked closely with botanists of his time, including Carl Linnaeus, to document plant species with clarity.
The composition displays three distinct botanical subjects, labelled numerically at the base of the print. The arrangement is typical of the period, grouping specimens to maximise the use of the page while maintaining a clear, observational focus. The inclusion of butterflies, a hallmark of this specific series, adds a layer of entomological interest to the botanical study. The hand-colouring applied to the etching provides a delicate finish, capturing the subtle variations in the petals of the pink Narcissus and the yellow flowers of the Ceratocephalus.
Ehret utilised a fine line quality, characteristic of copperplate engraving, to define the veins of the leaves and the structure of the stems. The background remains clean, allowing the viewer to focus on the morphology of the plants. The text at the bottom provides the Latin nomenclature for each specimen, reflecting the scientific rigour applied to the work. This print is an example of the intersection between art and natural history, where the primary objective was the accurate recording of the natural world for study and classification. The balance between the scientific labels and the aesthetic arrangement of the specimens demonstrates the dual purpose of such works in the eighteenth century.
