An etching by Edgar Degas, this work presents a double composition of a circus scene and a nude woman in a private room, reflecting Degas's interest in voyeurism and intimate spaces.
This etching by Edgar Degas (1834-1917) presents a double composition, a characteristic feature of his experimental printmaking. On the left, a scene from the Cirque Fernando unfolds, depicting performers and props rendered with a network of fine lines. The right side offers an intimate glimpse into a private space, showing a nude woman standing in a doorway, the room behind her containing a bed and other furnishings. The juxtaposition of these two distinct scenes creates a sense of voyeurism, a theme frequently explored by Degas. Degas was a French artist celebrated for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist. He was a superb draughtsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in this print. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and depiction of human isolation.
