A detailed 16th-century engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicting the biblical scene of Pontius Pilate washing his hands.
This engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicts the biblical scene of Pontius Pilate washing his hands, a gesture signifying his refusal to accept responsibility for the crucifixion of Jesus. Wierix, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates his technical precision through the use of fine, controlled lines to create texture and depth. The composition is divided between the elevated, seated figure of Pilate and the agitated crowd below, who are shown reacting to the event.
The scene includes a Latin inscription from the Gospel of Matthew, which provides the narrative context for the print. The architectural elements, such as the steps and the distant building, are rendered with a focus on perspective, typical of the period. Wierix was known for his ability to produce small-scale, highly detailed prints that were often collected in albums or used for devotional purposes. The figures are dressed in contemporary sixteenth-century attire, a common practice in Northern European art of the time, which brought biblical narratives into the visual language of the viewer.
The print captures the tension of the moment, with the servant pouring water over Pilate's hands while the crowd gathers in the foreground. The shading techniques, including cross-hatching, define the forms of the figures and the stone architecture. This work reflects the technical standards of the Antwerp print publishing industry, where Wierix operated as both an engraver and a publisher. The clarity of the line work allows for a clear reading of the narrative, despite the small scale of the original plate. Collectors of Old Master prints value these works for their historical documentation of religious iconography and the mastery of the burin displayed by the Wierix family.
