A 1566 scientific illustration of a squid by Dutch naturalist Adriaen Coenen, featuring detailed ink and wash work with period annotations.
This illustration of a squid, or 'Pijlinktvis', originates from the Visboek (Fish Book) by Adriaen Coenen, a Dutch fisherman and amateur naturalist. Created in 1566, the work captures the curiosity of the sixteenth-century observer regarding marine life. Coenen documented various sea creatures, often based on his own observations or reports from fellow mariners in the Netherlands.
The drawing displays a clear, analytical approach to natural history. The squid is rendered in a symmetrical, frontal orientation, which allows for the systematic labelling of its anatomy. The artist uses ink and wash to define the form, with subtle shading to provide a sense of volume to the mantle and tentacles. The surrounding handwritten annotations provide measurements and descriptive notes, reflecting the practical, empirical nature of Coenen's documentation.
Unlike the fantastical sea monsters often depicted in contemporary maps and bestiaries, this study aims for a degree of accuracy. The tentacles are arranged in a decorative, almost heraldic fashion, yet the individual suckers are delineated with care. The paper shows the natural ageing of a sixteenth-century manuscript, with the ink lines remaining crisp against the toned background. This piece offers a glimpse into the early modern transition toward observational science, where the artist acts as both recorder and cataloguer of the natural world. It is a fine example of the intersection between maritime trade, local knowledge, and the burgeoning interest in biological classification during the Renaissance period.
