A refined seventeenth-century portrait engraving of the Flemish printmaker Pieter de Jode the Elder, executed by Lucas Vorsterman I after a design by Anthony van Dyck.
This portrait engraving depicts the Flemish engraver and printmaker Pieter de Jode the Elder. It is a fine example of the collaborative printmaking culture in seventeenth-century Antwerp. The work is part of the Iconography series, a collection of portraits of notable contemporaries, including artists, scholars, and statesmen, which was initiated by Anthony van Dyck.
Lucas Vorsterman I, a master of the burin, demonstrates his technical precision in this plate. The composition follows the conventions of the period, presenting the subject in a three-quarter view with a dignified posture. De Jode is shown wearing a ruff and a heavy cloak, his hand resting near his chest in a gesture of composure. The play of light across the fabric of his garment is rendered through a series of controlled, parallel lines, a hallmark of the period's engraving style. The background remains relatively plain, ensuring the focus remains on the sitter's facial features and expression.
Below the portrait, the inscription identifies the subject as 'Petrus de Iode, Calcographus et Delineator Antverpiensis', noting his profession as an engraver and draughtsman from Antwerp. The credit line acknowledges the original design by Anthony van Dyck and the execution by Vorsterman. This print provides a clear view into the professional relationships between artists in the Low Countries during the Baroque era. The clarity of the lines and the depth of the shadows demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship expected in professional printmaking workshops of the time. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of printmaking or the portraiture of the seventeenth century.
