A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Edelinck, after Hyacinthe Rigaud, depicting the French official Pierre Surirey de Saint-Remy.
This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts Pierre Surirey de Saint-Remy, a figure of note within the French military administration of the late seventeenth century. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the medium of copperplate engraving. This work is based on an original painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud, the pre-eminent portraitist of the era, whose style defined the visual language of the French court.
The composition follows the conventions of the period: the subject is presented within an oval frame, resting upon a stone plinth that bears his name and titles. Surirey de Saint-Remy is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a voluminous periwig and a draped cloak, which were standard markers of status and authority for men of his station. Edelinck employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to render the textures of the fabric and the soft curls of the wig. The play of light across the subject's face provides a sense of volume, while the background remains dark to focus attention on the sitter.
Below the oval portrait, a small heraldic crest is positioned centrally, adding a layer of formal identification. The engraving demonstrates the collaborative nature of print production in the seventeenth century, where the skills of the painter and the engraver combined to circulate the likenesses of influential individuals. This print offers a clear view of the aesthetic priorities of the late Baroque period, where clarity, order, and the representation of social hierarchy were paramount. The work remains a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Edelinck during his tenure in the service of the French crown.
