Description
Piel Island draws the eye along a pale causeway towards its compact stone castle, set above bright tidal water and banks of coastal flowers.
A sinuous strip of sand and shingle crosses the shallows from the foreground, with dark stones gathered along either side. The fort rises on its small green mound in blocks of warm grey masonry, its round tower catching the light beneath scattered cloud. Pink thrift appears among the nearest rocks, and a low distant shore sits beyond the island.
Piel Island suits anyone who knows the sense of approach across the exposed shore, where the route narrows as the water retreats. Visitors can carry back the island's unusual profile, while residents may recognise the causeway's curve, the castle walls and the open sweep of Morecambe Bay.
